5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Route: Marangu

Mount Kilimanjaro or just Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, with its summit about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The first people known to have reached the summit of the mountain were Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller, in 1889.

Day 1 Moshi- Mandara Hut, 8km/5mi, 3-4 hours
Leave Moshi town and proceed to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Walk through the rainforest to the Mandara encampment. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colobus monkeys.

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut, 12km/7.5mi, 5-6 hours
We leave the glades of the rain-forest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. Views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo are amazing. Look for giant lobelias and grounsels.

Day 3: Horombo Hut- Kibo Hut, 9km/5.5ml, 5-6 hours
Ascending, we now pass the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation begins with upper heathland but then disappears into “moonscape”.

Day 4: Kibo Hut – Summit- Horombo Hut,
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s point located on the crater rim. Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn. From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Mandara Hut – Moshi, 20km/12.5ml
After breakfast, Walk down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu to connect with your transport Vehicle back to Moshi Town.
