Frequently Asked Questions About Mount Kenya Group Trekking
Here are answers to some of the most common questions about climbing Mount Kenya in a group setting.
What is a Mount Kenya group trek and how does it work?
A Mount Kenya group trek is a scheduled, guided trek to Point Lenana (4,985m) — Africa’s second-highest mountain — where you join a small group of fellow trekkers rather than booking a fully private expedition. Ahambi Tours runs guaranteed group departures throughout the year on two route options: the 5-Day Chogoria–Sirimon traverse and the 5-Day Sirimon–Chogoria traverse. Both routes are led by certified, experienced mountain guides with full crew support including a mountain chef, porters, and safety equipment. You join as a solo traveller, couple, or small group — and the trek runs regardless of how many people have booked.
How much does a Mount Kenya group trek cost?
Ahambi Tours offers two group trek options at the following prices:
5-Day Chogoria–Sirimon (Camping): Non-Residents: USD 900 per person. Residents: USD 700 per person
5-Day Sirimon–Chogoria (Mountain Huts): Non-Residents: USD 1,000 per person. Residents: USD 800 per person
A deposit of USD 100 per person confirms your place. The balance is due 5 days before departure. Emergency medical evacuation cover is available as an optional add-on at USD 30 per person and is strongly recommended.
How long does it take to climb Mount Kenya?
Both Ahambi Tours group trek options take 5 days and 4 nights from Nairobi to the summit and back. Day 1 begins with pickup from Nairobi and ends at the first mountain camp. Day 4 is summit day — beginning at 3:00 AM and reaching Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise. Day 5 returns to Nairobi with an expected arrival between 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM depending on the route. For trekkers who want more time on the mountain for better acclimatisation or photography, private trek options with custom durations are also available.
Is a Mount Kenya group trek suitable for beginners?
Yes — both group trek options are designed for trekkers without prior high-altitude or technical climbing experience. Point Lenana is a trekking peak, not a technical climb. No specialist equipment or climbing skills are required. For first-time high-altitude trekkers, we strongly recommend the 5-Day Sirimon–Chogoria option, which includes a dedicated acclimatisation day at Hausberg Col (4,560m) and uses mountain hut accommodation throughout — giving beginners the best possible summit success rate and the most comfortable experience on the mountain.
What is the summit success rate on Mount Kenya group treks?
Our summit success rate for Point Lenana on Ahambi Tours group treks is 97%. This is one of the highest success rates of any operator on Mount Kenya and reflects twelve years of guiding experience, certified guides trained in altitude awareness, and itineraries specifically designed to give every trekker the best possible chance of reaching the summit.
Our certified guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor blood oxygen saturation throughout the trek and actively manage the pace, hydration, and wellbeing of every member of the group from Day 1 to summit day.
What is the difference between a Mount Kenya group trek and a private trek?
The key difference is flexibility and exclusivity. A group trek runs on fixed scheduled departure dates — your group joins other trekkers, benefits from the energy and camaraderie of a shared experience, and pays a lower per-person price. Departures are guaranteed year-round regardless of group numbers. A private trek runs on your chosen dates, with your group exclusively — no other trekkers, your own pace, and full flexibility to customise the route, duration, and itinerary. Private treks are available year-round on request. Both options use the same certified guides, the same quality equipment, and the same high safety standards.
Are Mount Kenya group trek departures guaranteed?
Yes — every Ahambi Tours Mount Kenya group trek departs on its scheduled date regardless of the number of participants confirmed. If you book, your trek runs. You will never arrive in Kenya to find your trek cancelled due to low numbers. This is our commitment to every group trekker — whether you are a solo traveller, a couple, or a small group. Departures run throughout the year from January to December.
When is the best time for a Mount Kenya group trek?
The best time for a Mount Kenya group trek is during the two dry seasons: January to March and June to October. These months offer the clearest skies, firmest trail conditions, and the highest probability of a clear sunrise view from Point Lenana. January and February are particularly excellent — crystal clear conditions with lower crowd levels than the July–September peak.
Ahambi Tours runs guaranteed group departures every month of the year — including during the rainy seasons of April, May, and November. During these months, we operate the 5-Day Sirimon–Chogoria route, which uses mountain hut accommodation throughout. Huts provide significantly better shelter than camping tents in wet conditions, making this the right choice for trekkers who want to climb during the quieter rainy season months. Trail conditions on the lower mountain can be muddy during the rains, but the upper mountain and summit approach remain achievable with the right preparation and guide support.
If you are considering trekking during April, May, or November, contact us for current trail conditions and we will advise honestly on what to expect.
How many people are in a Mount Kenya group trek?
Maximum group size is 12 participants. Groups typically run between 4 and 10 trekkers. We deliberately keep groups small — a smaller group moves at a better pace, receives more individual attention from the guide, and creates a more genuine shared experience on the mountain. You will not be part of a large, impersonal group on a Mount Kenya group trek with Ahambi Tours.
What accommodation is provided on the group trek?
Accommodation depends on the route:
5-Day Chogoria–Sirimon: Camping throughout — high-quality tents with sleeping mats provided. Two trekkers share each tent.
5-Day Sirimon–Chogoria: Mountain huts throughout — Old Moses Hut, Shipton’s Camp Hut, and Meru Bandas. Beds with mattresses provided at every camp. This is the more comfortable option, particularly for trekkers who are sensitive to cold on pre-summit nights.
For the camping option, tent sharing is based on the same gender for solo travellers. Couples and friends travelling together may share a tent — request this at the time of booking. A private tent is available at USD 50 for the entire trek.
Do you offer a private tent option on the camping route?
Yes — a private tent is available on the 5-Day Chogoria–Sirimon camping route at USD 50 for the entire trek. This option is ideal for solo travellers who prefer their own space rather than sharing with another trekker. Couples and friends travelling together are automatically paired in the same tent at no additional cost — simply let us know at the time of booking and we will arrange this for you. Request the private tent option at the time of booking to ensure availability.
What meals are included on a Mount Kenya group trek?
All meals are included from lunch on Day 1 through to breakfast on Day 5. Meals are prepared by an experienced mountain chef who accompanies the group throughout the trek. The menu includes a full range of hot meals, snacks, and beverages suitable for high-altitude trekking. All dietary requirements are catered for — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other preferences — provided at the time of booking. Safe drinking water is provided throughout. We encourage all trekkers to bring a reusable water bottle of at least one litre.
Is transport from Nairobi included in the Mount Kenya group trek?
Yes — return transport from Nairobi is included in both group trek packages. Pickup is from your hotel or residence in Nairobi on the morning of Day 1. Pickups along the route in Nanyuki or Chogoria Town are also available depending on the route. Drop-off in Nairobi is included on the evening of Day 5. Airport transfers from JKIA and Wilson Airport can be arranged on request at an additional cost.
What is altitude sickness and how does Ahambi Tours manage it on the trek?
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs when the body ascends faster than it can adapt to the reduced oxygen at altitude. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. Most people experience some mild symptoms above 3,500 metres — this is normal and manageable with rest and hydration. All Ahambi Tours mountain guides are trained in wilderness first aid and altitude illness recognition. Guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor blood oxygen saturation throughout the trek. We advise all trekkers to consult their doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) before departure and to drink a minimum of three litres of water per day on the mountain.
Can I join a Mount Kenya group trek as a solo traveller?
Yes — solo travellers are welcome on all Ahambi Tours Mount Kenya group departures. You will join a small group of fellow adventurers from various countries and backgrounds. The shared experience of climbing together — particularly the pre-dawn summit push — is one of the things solo trekkers most frequently mention as a highlight of the group trek experience. Your trek is guaranteed to run on the scheduled date whether you are the only confirmed participant or part of a full group of twelve.
What gear do I need to pack for a Mount Kenya group trek?
The key items for a Mount Kenya group trek fall into four categories:
Clothing and layers: A moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece or down mid layer, and a waterproof and windproof outer jacket. Temperatures at Point Lenana before dawn can reach −5°C to −10°C — layers are essential regardless of season. Trekking trousers, thermal leggings for summit night, a warm hat, and light gloves complete the clothing kit.
Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof mid or high-cut hiking boots — broken in before the trek. Gaiters are recommended for the summit day scree sections. Sandals or camp shoes for evenings at the huts or camp.
Essentials: A headtorch with spare batteries for the 3:00 AM summit start, trekking poles (highly recommended for both ascent and descent), sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle of at least one litre.
Sleeping: A sleeping bag rated to at least −5°C for the camping route. On the hut route, bedding is provided but a liner adds warmth and comfort.
If you do not own any of the above, Ahambi Tours has a full gear rental service covering all essential items — from sleeping bags and waterproof boots to trekking poles and warm jackets. See the gear rental table on this page for full pricing.

What fitness level is required for a Mount Kenya group trek?
You should be able to walk uphill continuously for five to seven hours carrying a light daypack. You do not need to be an athlete, but a base level of cardiovascular fitness built through regular exercise in the weeks before the trek makes a significant difference — particularly on the long summit day, which typically covers 23 to 24 kilometres with significant altitude gain and loss. Mental resilience matters as much as physical fitness on summit day, particularly during the pre-dawn climb when the combination of altitude, cold, and darkness challenges most trekkers. Our guides set the pace to the group and no trekker is left behind.
What trekking gear can I rent for the Mount Kenya group trek and how much does it cost?

Can I combine a Mount Kenya group trek with a Kenya safari or Kilimanjaro?
Yes — many of our guests combine a Mount Kenya group trek with a Kenya wildlife safari or a Kilimanjaro climb before or after the mountain. It is important to note that all safari and Kilimanjaro options are organised as private arrangements — your group exclusively, on your chosen dates — rather than as group departures. This means your safari or Kilimanjaro climb is fully tailored to your schedule, group size, and preferences.
Popular safari combinations include 3 days Samburu National Reserve (two hours from Nanyuki or Chogoria), the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and our Northern Kenya safari to Lake Turkana and the Chalbi Desert — managed entirely by our own team.
For Kilimanjaro, a Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro combination is one of East Africa’s great mountain adventures — two of Africa’s most iconic summits in a single trip. Our Arusha base in Tanzania allows us to manage the full combined itinerary across both countries without subcontracting. Contact us to discuss the right sequence, timing, and private arrangements for your safari or Kilimanjaro combination.
