Day 1: Nairobi to Chogoria Town to Chogoria Gate (2,960m)
  • Drive Distance: 220km (approx. 4-5 hours)
  • Trek Distance: 10km
  • Altitude Gain: +600m

Your Mount Kenya trekking adventure begins with an early 7:00 AM departure from Nairobi. Enjoy the scenic drive through Kenya’s central highlands to Chogoria Town, the starting point of your trek. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your trekking crew and perform a final gear check to ensure you’re prepared for the hike.

From Chogoria Town, you’ll drive 12km into the lush forest before trekking the last 10km to Chogoria Gate. The trail winds through dense rainforest, home to wildlife like black-and-white colobus monkeys, Sykes’ monkeys, waterbucks, and buffalos. Bird enthusiasts can spot the Hartlaub’s turaco, olive thrush, and African pied wagtail.

After 2-3 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Meru Mount Kenya Bandas, located near Chogoria Gate, where you’ll spend your first night surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Day 2: Chogoria Gate to Lake Ellis (3,350m)

  • Altitude Gain: +390m

The second day’s trek begins with a gentle hike through the heath forest, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. You’ll visit the beautiful Nithi Waterfall, a hidden gem in the Chogoria forest, before continuing to Lake Ellis, a serene alpine lake where you’ll set up camp for the night.

In the afternoon, consider hiking to Mugi Hill (3,541m) for acclimatization or trying your hand at fishing in Lake Ellis, which is known for its trout. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning scenery make this a memorable day.

Day 3: Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson (4,000m)

  • Trek Distance: 14km
  • Altitude Gain: +650m

This day’s trek takes you through the breathtaking moorland and afro-alpine zones, with the Gorges Valley providing stunning views throughout the day. As you ascend past 3,800m, the rugged peaks of Mount Kenya come into view, setting the stage for the summit days ahead.

The day ends with a descent into the heart of the Gorges Valley, where you’ll camp at Lake Michaelson. This beautiful lake is surrounded by towering cliffs and offers an opportunity for fishing or simply enjoying the serene alpine environment.

Day 4: Lake Michaelson to Austrian Hut (4,790m)

  • Altitude Gain: +790m

Today’s trek transitions from the afro-alpine zone to the alpine zone, with the trail offering close-up views of Mount Kenya’s main peaks. You’ll pass tarns and glacier lakes, hiking through the dramatic Tooth Col, before arriving at Austrian Hut, your base for the summit attempt.

Take time to explore the nearby Lewis Glacier and Icy Cave as you acclimatize for the early morning trek to Point Lenana.

Day 5: Austrian Hut to Point Lenana (4,985m) to Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

  • Altitude Gain: +195m
  • Altitude Loss: -1,685m

The highlight of your Mount Kenya climbing journey begins before dawn. At 5:00 AM, start your ascent to Point Lenana (4,985m), the third-highest peak of Mount Kenya. Witness an unforgettable sunrise, with panoramic views stretching as far as Mount Kilimanjaro to the south on clear days.

After celebrating your achievement, descend to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast. After a brief rest, continue descending through the scenic Mackinder’s Valley, crossing the Likii North and Ontulili Valleys on your way to Old Moses Camp, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 6: Old Moses Camp to Sirimon Gate (2,650m) to Nairobi

  • Trek Distance: 9km
  • Altitude Loss: -650m
  • Drive Distance: 195km (approx. 4-5 hours)

Your final day of hiking Mount Kenya begins with a morning trek through the Sirimon rainforest. This is an excellent opportunity for birdwatching and spotting wildlife such as monkeys and bushbucks. Arrive at Sirimon Gate, where your trekking adventure officially ends.

From Sirimon Gate, you’ll drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon. Reflect on your incredible Mount Kenya trekking experience as you are dropped off at your hotel.
