Mount Kenya Weather by Month: Temperatures & Best Time to Climb. Planning to climb Mount Kenya? One of the most important things to consider is the weather and temperatures—which can vary a lot depending on the time of year and the altitude. Knowing what to expect helps you pack right and choose the best time for your trek.
At Ahambi Tours, we’ve guided climbers through every season. In this blog, we break down Mount Kenya’s weather and temperatures by month to help you prepare for a safe and unforgettable trek.
Mount Kenya Climate Overview
Mount Kenya is a high-altitude mountain, with three main climate zones:
- Lower slopes (1,600–2,800m) – Warm and humid with forest vegetation
- Afro-alpine zone (2,800–4,000m) – Cool and misty with grasslands and moorlands
- Alpine zone (4,000m and above) – Cold, dry, and often frosty near the summit
The higher you go, the colder it gets—especially at night. Temperatures can drop below freezing above 4,000m.
